books

i will not be able to remember all my ramblings from last night about books, but it really did live up to the name of my blog.....

i think i shall try and start a list here of 'must read' books and 'must own' books.

of course i have no idea how/when we will afford any of this but hey a girl can dream!
books are a high priority here, but somehow books for dh (english teacher) and the kids (homeschoolers are always buying books - they're a RESOURCE!!!!) seem more urgent. books purely for my own enjoyment.... well..... there's always something else to buy huh? lol

MUST OWN
the potter books - sick of having to reserve them at the library when i want to check something or re read.

MUST READ
more chaim potok
cs lewis 'the great divorce'

ok mind's gone blank.
will update soon and go searching for all those titles....

feel free to leave any suggestions in a comment!

lol i'm sure it would suit me better than being an auror......

no chance of me being a professor any time soon at ANYTHING! i'm a high school drop out mate!

The "science" one by Lewis is generally refered to as the "space trilogy" and consists of 3 books

Out of the Silent Planet
Perelandra
That Hideous Strength

and, high school dimploma or not, you're still good at reading/experiencing and enjoying and discussion ... which, similar to what you said over at MM about music, makes you a professor on a lot more fundamental level because your children learn from you and your DH more than anyone at this point in their lives, and really, because of that fact, more than anyone in the entire rest of their lives.

thanks merlin for the vote of confidence.

funnily i can embrace that aspect of it readily (homeschooling after all!), but when it comes to a broader application have no confidence whatsoever. wierd huh?

i read some of the blogs (have visited a couple of the links on your side bar) and feel like such a fraud!
(not fishing for compliments! i cringe at that - british parenting you know! so just trying to be honest)
i think i relate to this on way too personal / instinctive emotional a level and my intellectual understanding is quite superficial.

not to say i wouldn't love the opportunity to study in depth and further my frame of reference.

i know that i am providing my kids with an example of loving reading and learning and embracing that as a fundemental in life.

(hehehe - see this is my blog so i can rave on in a self absorbed fashion with a clear conscience!)

merlin - if you soldier on this far down all that drivel, can you give me the list of potok books to seek out in order of "must read"-ness.

I hope you're DH's library storage system is a bit better than mine or you could be in for quite a search ... even with everything on shelves I am forever saying "now, where did I put that book?"

system? what system!
in a box of books that he has packed, there may also be empty crisp packets, empty computer game boxes and old socks. (and that's a specific example i call to mind!)

whew ... I was hanging in there tuff till the socks thing ... that is brutal LOL

But, if you enlisted the help of Dobby, the old clothing might clear itself out of the way automatically if you told him he could have any old clothing articles he found in the boxes ... the socks would definitely be gone in a snap :)

Do you have Half Price Books way over there? Ours always seems to have Harry potter books cheaper. (unfortunately, not the audio books which I prefer)

oh my! proof that merlin isn't here alone!

hello my boaz's ruth.
um. are you referring to a particular shop?
i would totally love the audio of stephen fry reading ALL of the potter books. kind of like an investment and heirloom to pass on to the next generation lol.

tell you what, merlin, a house elf wouldn't stay enslaved here for long.... clothes pop up in the STRANGEST places....

Half Price Books is a chain bookstore in the US (at least) That sells almost all its books for half of retail. IT has more selection than a typical used bookstore -- though I still can't ALwAYS find a Harry Potter book when I go (are currently looking to replace book 1 as ours is falling apart)

oh i thought it must be a particular shop.
we don't have that one here in australia.

i am hoping to one day own the entire set of adult covers (just because i actually like the covers. they look good on the shelf yk?) and also the hardcover kids ones.
i'd love to see the scholastic set with all the different fonts etc (though the differences in text would appall me i'm sure. i'm a bit of a cultural snob like that unfortunately...)

btw does jim dale give the characters english accents? i find it hard to imagine them with american accents....

Here in the US, at least around where I am, I think Half Priced books are usually connected with Barne's and Noble ... i think

Jo, oh I think Dobby would stay around after freed ... building his wardrobe you know :)

Connected with Barnes and Noble how? Cause I knew of and went to Half Price Books (in Texas) long before I knew Barnes & Noble existed. (I first saw it in Seattle-area. It seems to have migrated back to Texas now but wasn't there before.)
